Feeding the Bookworm in You on a Budget

No comments:
It is no secret that I am a voracious reader. My desk is a happy mess of piles of books that I’ve just read and about to read (or read again). I probably spend more on books than on clothes and shoes. Even my bag is never without a pocketbook that I read whenever I’m out. I definitely am a bookworm through and through. Books aren’t the only thing that feed my insatiable hunger for written words. Magazines also dominate a good part of my desk and bookshelf.

Reading a dozen different magazines a month takes a hefty chunk of the budget though. With my little girl starting school and our new home still under construction, I had to find a way to sustain my love for reading books and magazines without having to spend too much. Not wanting to sacrifice my reading pleasure, here are several ways through which I now feed the bookworm in me:

1. Find A Local Library. You are lucky if you have a local library that’s well stocked with the latest publications and book titles. You can simply go there to spend your free time poring over your favorite magazines and books. Most libraries are open to the public, while some charge a minimal fee that allows you to borrow books for a limited time. This small expense is nowhere near the amount of money you will spend buying magazines and books from newsstands and bookstores.

2. Second-Hand Book Shops. You will be surprised to find treasures in these quaint shops. Some books are a little tattered, but most of the stocks in these shops are still in great condition. Be patient in scouring through the shelves for your favorite titles and authors. It’s really just like going through the library shelves. Your book budget will go a long way with the great discounts on these second-hand books.

3. Magazine Subscriptions. Subscribing to your fave magazines would save you more than 10% from newsstand prices. If you search hard enough, you may even get to save up to 90% on your magazine expenses from sites such as Subscription Addict. If you think about it, that’s like getting 10 magazines for the price of one. Even if you have the same budget, wouldn’t you want to get more magazines for your money?

4. Magazine or Book Swap. Favorite books deserve a permanent place in our book shelves but others can be passed to other book lovers or traded for a different book. There are magazine or book swag groups online and offline. Joining these groups will allow you to get new titles without spending any money. At the same time, you can also get rid of some of the old reading materials overflowing from your shelves.

It is not impossible to indulge in a reading frenzy even if your funds are limited. While I have found ways to save on my expenses for books and magazines, there is also a way to earn more funds to spend for your reading materials. If you have more than enough magazines and books lying around, sort through them and pick out those that you are already willing to part with. You might want to think about the fact that magazines may lose their novelty over time. But, there are still those who find use for old magazines. You may want to make some money out of your old ones by selling them. Have your own book sale to build your “reading fund.”

Campus Book Rentals saves you money on textbooks

No comments:
College expenses such as housing, tuition and college textbooks can quickly add up and put a big dent in a student’s wallet. Often it is very hard to justify spending hundreds -- if not thousands -- of dollars on books that you will likely be used for just a semester. Thankfully, Campus Book Rentals has come up with a great way to get students the textbooks that they need for college, all while saving more than 50% of the cover price. Campus book rentals offers a huge variety of books that are sure to please even the most obscure majors including City Folk: English Country Dance and Politics of Folk in Modern America. Finding the book that you need is super easy and you can search by keyword, author, and subject or ISBN number. Once you order, your book it will be quickly processed and promptly shipped to you at no added cost. In fact, once you are done with the textbook simply ship it back in a prepaid envelope-with free shipping both ways you never get stuck with hefty postal charges. The rental periods available are tailored to the life of a busy college student. You can choose from semester (130 days), quarter (85 days) or summer (55 day) rentals. If you need to keep the textbooks just a little bit longer to study for that all important final exams take advantage of the 15 day grace period allowed when returning your book. Save your college money for what really counts and rent your cheap college textbooks instead.

Gene Reads

3 comments:
I love reading. I think I got really hooked into it when I was in high school and I saw my childhood friend reading a young adult novel during school breaks and I was intrigued. She lent me her old copy and the rest is history. Of course, the books I prefer to read are not available in the library. Back then, we cannot afford to buy the books that we want to read. A book is about our week's worth allowance. So my friend and I would visit bookstores each day after school and read a chapter of the unsealed books until we finished reading it just by visiting bookstores. We always get this annoyed looks from the staff because we always hang out in their stations but those looks didn't bother us. Hahaha!

As I grew older and received more demanding responsibilities at school and life in general, the number of books I read in a month declined. Sad to say, I only read 18 books last year. When this year started, I planned to double the numbers of those books and I want to kick myself for not fulfilling even half of it! It's October now and I've only read 13 new books out of the 36 books in my goal. Ugh, it's so annoying!

That doesn't mean I'm not reading though. I am in fact addicted to *whisper*fanfiction*whisper*. Some of the stories I've read are so well written that the writers made a move and publish their own stories commercially. I am yet to buy some of those stories but I will have to order those from US because those are not readily available in the local bookstores.

And because I am not in the mood to learn new characters yet, I am re-reading one of my favorite book series: Guild Hunter by Nalini Singh.

Should I make a separate blog for the books I read? It might encourage me in reading more books before the year ends. Hmnnn, we'll see...

Books to Film

I thought I'm excited for the Twilight screening on November but I just seen ET and saw their behind the scenes footage of Angels & Demons! Wow! One of my favorite books on film. Yes, Tom Hanks is still Robert Langdon. I just hope that the film won't be that much of a disappointment compared to The Da Vinci Code. Nevertheless, I'm still excited for the 2009 screening! Yay!

Here's the official trailer found in YouTube (they started filming June 2008)

And here is an impressive fan made trailer. Makes me more excited!

Japanese Magazines

5 comments:
Since late last year, I've been collecting Japanese magazines like crazy. I currently have 19 mooks in total and wishing to add more in the coming months.

The magazines I have here in the photo are mostly sewing magazines. I especially love those bag making magazines. I just want to have them all. The patterns are so amazing and I won't be surprised if I find myself suddenly hand-stitching one. But just thinking about it makes it so troublesome, right.

Anyway, the first batch of my collection were given to me by K-kun while the latest addition were bought in a local bookstore. Would you believe that we have these wonderful magazines sold locally. I would spend a day's worth of salary just for these mooks, it's crazy! If only I could save enough money for a decent sewing machine. It's my dream to at least make clothes and bags based on these mooks.

What makes you crazy these days?

Magazines + Fabric

1 comment:
Yesterday was so fun! I met Kathy-chan, a friend from my previous employment and we ate from one Japanese restaurant to another. But before that, I received my gift to myself, a Moleskine (mol-a-skeen-a) Red Limited Edition Twin Set of Weekly Diary + Notebook! I am loving my new planner plus the red color of the set matches my favorite Nike bag.

And again I was blessed with a couple of Japanese craft books from my Santa and was lucky enough to get a hold of Adorn Summer and Spring 2007 and Crochet Today! July/August 2007 in Booksale. I was so glad because I love the patterns I've seen in Ravelry in that particular Crochet Today! release. Really looking forward in making those projects as soon as I received the lovely yarns I ordered online.

I must say that my lady luck is working overtime because finally this girl has found a local store selling Japanese fabrics! Woohoo! I only bought a yard because really, I felt foolish enough for buying fabric for a future project when I still haven't found the perfect sewing machine yet.

Short term goal: To find the perfect yet compact sewing machine before January 2008 ends.

A Special Treat

I feel blessed for having a partner like KC. I have always been a brat and lazy when it comes to finishing his scarf but he loved me nevertheless and asked someone a huge favor just so he can make me happy and for me to stop annoying him. I felt so ecstatic when he gave me a plastic bag filled with magazines. Not just magazines but Japanese craft magazines! Whoa!

You can't imagine my delight when I look into the bag. I jumped, laughed like crazy and hang on his neck and my grin is so wide I think I was lucky that my jaws didn't lock.

And look at that! I have Cotton Friend Summer Edition 2007! This is too much! Too much! Too many wonderful things going on and I so wanted to have a sewing machine right at this very moment so I can start working on the projects!

Oh my gosh, I can't sleep. I think I'll sleep with my magazines tonight.
